SWITZERLAND TO AMSTERDAM
River Rhine
Personal | Photography

In August 2018, my family and I went on a Viking River Cruise up the River Rhine, from Basel, Switzerland, to Amsterdam, The Netherlands. During the cruise, we visited multiple different cities and toured their historic roads, streets, and sights. I really enjoyed the amazing cathedrals and castles that we saw, the beautiful architecture and stain glass windows were great to photograph. The light effect in these places were stunning.

Basel, Switzerland

The first city that I went to is Basel, Switzerland. There was no scheduled tour for this city, so me and my family walked around the city streets looking in shops and book stores, getting a feel for the amazing city and its beautiful culture.

Breisach, Germany

At our first city stop, we took a scenic excursion through the area’s renowned mountain landscape, rolling meadows and dense forests, until we arrived in Breisach. Once there, I took a hike through the Black Forest and visited local workshops that sold handmade cuckoo clocks and Black Forest Cake.

Strasbourg, France

In a guided tour of Strasbourg, we saw the European Parliament and tour the interior of the city’s famed cathedral. Free time allows us to explore the city’s blend of French and German cultures, resplendent churches, medieval covered bridges, verdant parks and handsome art nouveau and modernist architecture.

Speyer & Rüdesheim, Germany

On full day tour of Heidelberg, I saw the beautiful sandstone ruins of imposing Heidelberg Castle and admire the Neckar River Valley. After that, we walked through Old Town to Heidelberg’s renowned gates.

Koblenz, Germany

In Koblenz, we sailed along the most scenic stretch of the Rhine, where castles and fortresses overlook the river from their hilltop posts. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this part of the Middle Rhine Valley is so beautiful.

Cologne, Germany

During a tour of Cologne, Germany’s fourth largest city, we walked through Old Town past St. Martin’s Church and saw the Dom, Germany’s largest cathedral. The city was beautiful and amazing.

Kinderdijk, The Netherlands

After sail along the Rhine in the morning, admiring scenic views, I went on a tour of a network of windmills, on a rebuilt barge. I learned why the windmills were built and see how they work, plus entered one of the oldest windmills for a tour of its living quarters.
